Set on a hill overlooking one of England’s most historic cities, the University of Kent offers some unique academic experiences.
From graduating inside one of the most beautiful cathedrals to forensic science training in a live-fire ballistics facility, Kent offers opportunities you won’t find at most universities.
Here are some of the highlights from my visit!

Campus
Located just above Canterbury (about a 10-minute bus ride), Kent blends modern facilities with centuries-old surroundings.

Students can be in London in just 90 minutes by train, making it easy to access internships, cultural events, and career opportunities.
One of the most memorable traditions is graduation at Canterbury Cathedral—a rare privilege that adds ceremony and significance to the end of your studies.

On campus, you'll find plenty of green space, including the peaceful Labyrinth, which offers a quiet place for reflection.

It’s symbolic of Kent’s balance between academic intensity and personal wellbeing.
Founded in 1965, nowadays it's home to 18,000 students.

It's also one of the few collegiate universities in the UK, with every student belonging to one of seven colleges.

Some colleges are residential while others just form smaller communities; nevertheless, it's yet another opportunity to build friendships.

Students have 24/7 access to the library here as well.

Another unique feature about Kent is that it operates on a trimester system, meaning students take only two classes per term, allowing them to really go deep into the subject matter.
Each term is about 10 weeks, and there are minimal exams.

One of its best-known programs is Forensic Science, ranked joint 4th in the UK by the Complete University Guide (2026).
Its facilities rival those used in professional investigations, and the staff often do consulting work for the government, military, and police.
Students gain hands-on experience through:
A mock courtroom where students testify and face cross-examination
The West Oast Crime Scene House, with simulated homes, vehicles, and outdoor environments
A comparison microscope used to examine bullets, bones, hair, and fingerprints
The UK’s only university live-fire experimental ballistics facility

Kent's law school is also recognized as the first to operate its own Law Clinic where students get to work on real cases.

The city of Canterbury
With around 160,000 people, Canterbury has a small-town, classic English feel.

The key feature is obviously the cathedral, which is a major pilgrimage site as England's oldest cathedral.
Built in 597 by St. Augustine, it's sure seen its fair share of history, including the martyrdom of Thomas Becket.

Summary: University of Kent
The University of Kent offers a rare combination of a historic setting with cutting-edge facilities.
Whether you’re analyzing ballistics evidence, performing in a concert hall, or graduating in a centuries-old cathedral, Kent provides experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.
